About

I am Erica. I write about places slowly and on purpose.

I started publishing in 2020, mostly because I kept writing the same long answers to the same questions from friends and wanted somewhere to put them. It turned into a blog, then a channel, and then a way of planning trips that only really works if the planning happens in public.

What I make is long-form: full written guides, and one filmed piece per destination that runs twenty to thirty minutes because that is how long it takes to be honest about a place. There is no schedule pressure here, nothing is sponsored, and I have never taken a paid placement for a destination.

The current plan runs through 2028 and covers six journeys. Two are booked, three are planned properly, and one is a research file I am holding loosely and will take down rather than leave standing if it stops making sense.

How I travel

Four rules that shape every itinerary here

Fewer places, longer stays

I would rather know one neighbourhood properly than pass through six cities. Every itinerary on this site gets cut at least twice before departure, and the thing I remove is almost always another destination rather than another day.

Mornings are the whole trip

I am out before seven most days and finished by early evening. It costs me the nightlife of every city I visit and it buys me empty streets, better light and a version of each place that most visitors never see.

Public transport before anything else

Trains, ferries, trams and buses, in that order, and a rental car only where the country genuinely requires one. Moving the way residents move is the fastest route to understanding how a place is actually laid out.

Write it down while it is still wrong

The guides here go up before I travel, which means they are provisional and occasionally mistaken. I revise them after I return and mark what changed, because a guide that was never wrong was never tested.

What I carry

The gear approach

I am not a gear reviewer and this is not a shopping list. It is a description of what survived six years of removing things, and why.

One bag, no exceptions

Carry-on sized, four days of clothing, one warm layer and one shell regardless of the forecast. Six years of unpacking into a box rather than back into the wardrobe is what got it down to this, not buying anything clever.

One camera, one lens

A small body with a fixed focal length, plus a phone for anything quick. Removing the choice of lens removed the part of photography that was pulling me out of the trip, and the constraint made me move around subjects instead of standing still.

Paper for thinking, screens for filing

A notebook goes everywhere and most of this site starts in it. Everything gets typed up in the evening, which doubles as the first edit and catches the observations that would not have survived the night.

Nothing here is sponsored

I do not run affiliate links, I do not accept gear in exchange for coverage, and I have never taken a paid destination placement. When something in the bag fails I write about that too, which is a good deal easier without a sponsor attached.

Write to me

Route questions about any of the six destinations, corrections to something I have got wrong, and collaboration enquiries all land in the same place. I read and answer everything myself, which is why it sometimes takes a few days.

  • Planning a tripTell me the dates and what you have already booked. Vague questions get vague answers.
  • Found a mistakePlease send it. Corrections get made and credited on the page they affect.
  • Working togetherI do not take paid destination placements, but I am open to editorial commissions and speaking.

Route questions, collaboration enquiries and corrections to anything on this site are all welcome.

Replies come from Erica directly, usually within a few days.
